Digital Piano?

So here's the current debate. Weigh in.

I've been taking piano lessons for a couple months. Probably since about Oct/Nov of 2008. So not long. But, I played the clarinet in high school and was rather good at it. So I pick things up quickly.

To start out I bought a really cheap, <88 key keyboard. It worked. For about a week. One of my friends let me borrow her 88 key velocity sensitive keyboard. It's not weighted like a piano, so it doesn't really "feel" like one - but if you hit the key harder - it plays louder. Sub-optimal, but better than what I had.

I feel like not having a real piano is starting to hurt my development. By not having the same feel, it's kind of difficult to practice and get the same/right sound out b/c I'm not developing the motor skills really required to play.

So, I've been looking at getting a digital piano. One with weighted keys so that it feels like a piano, but digitally sampled sound. The problem is that they are really freaking expensive. I mean like the very bottom on the line I'm looking at about $500. I've looked at ebay - but to tell you the truth the deals aren't all that great after shipping. At most I could save about $50-75 off the ticket price of a model that is three or four years old. The current models that have just come up with the most up to date software, sampling, and hardware - maybe I'd get like a $30-$50 off. After shipping though - it's about the same as if I bought one on Amazon. Craigslist is even worse. People want you to buy their used equipment for the same price as they bought it. "I swear it's $150 off the retail price." Yeah, but you didn't pay the retail price if you were smart.... so you want me to buy it for the same price I could get a new one off of amazon... doesn't seem like a deal at all.

I'm all about used equipment. You grow out of things etc. And new equipment is flipping expensive. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pony up the couple hundred dollars and just buy one. I don't think that there is another way around it unfortunately.

I really wish that I had the space & the lack of neighbors so that I could get a real piano. Unfortunately, it's just not going to happen anytime soon.

As a piano player, I have to say that a weight key digital really is worth it, but only if you are planning to spend to stick with it for awhile. You've been posting for awhile about playing, so it seems like you're going to do it - to be honest, I got mine on Craigslist, and that was about the best deal I found.
