Managers

This week has been a bit of a crazy week. I had to deal with the customer from hell on Mon/Tues in Chicago. (I'd like to comment about how much I dislike Chicago. It has all the things that you would want in a city; it is just not for me.) I've been in Edmonton Alberta - that's right - up here with all the cannooks, essentially cleaning up problems. I think that 80% of what I have been doing lately is cleaning up the problems that the guy who got fired created. I don't understand why they let it go on for so long. He was working there for almost a year and a half before they canned him. After 6 months there should have been some serious action, and he should have been done with in 9 months max.

It is supposed to get really freaking cold during any time other than the summer here. Men out number women, and men aren't real men unless they can get it up at -30 deg C (at least that's what my cab driver told me.)

I've become slightly jaded about travel. I'm starting to develop what many other frequent travelers have, the requirement to have things a certain way. Some people manifest this in things like having rye toast with two poached eggs at breakfast with orange juice every morning. (I'm a Starbucks girl myself; I will drive out of my way to go to Starbucks, I have a bit of a bad habit.) In trying to experience the best of Edmonton (the city has a million people in it, there has got to be something to do) I went to the West Edmonton Mall (highly recommended by about everyone around here.) It is supposed to be the largest mall in North America, it has a huge water park that has a wave pool, an ice rink, a theme park, tons of stores, a mini golf course, etc etc. It's really large. I have to admit that I was highly disappointed. The quality of the stores could be best described as "white trash." The highest class stores in the mall were places like Banana Republic and Bebe. I was hoping for at least a few nicer stores. I felt like it was more about the shear number of stores rather than the quality of the stores that was important. I guess for that type of environment and the clientele that it would draw - it makes sense. Just disappointing to the more discerning consumer.

I found this magazine article in my hotel room, of all places. I thought it was a very well thought out and concise piece on the major things that make up good management. I think that the only thing I would ad to the article is "lead by example." T00 often management tells people what to do, but does not follow those same dictums themselves.

I also learned that Ketchup chips are very popular in Canada, and wheat beers aren't really popular.
