Bah!
Thanksgiving was fun as always. Eating, boozing, playing wii, laziness, which is a great vacation. At least I had a few days off work. Both my brother and my father have since bought HDTV's. They're great and all - but all the programming isn't in HD yet so it kinda sucks. Plus the HDDVD vs Blu-Ray war isn't over yet. I honestly am not sure if either will be adopted or well accepted b/c consumers where so disillusioned after BetaMax vs. VCR's. I hope everything just moves to the non-disk - and you just download everything. I don't think that will happen anytime soon because the tubes of the interwebs are going to be clogged by all those TV's soon. I think that networks are fast finding ways to make cash off of interwebs streaming. I think that they could potentially make more money if they would do the research surveys and properly use the interweb tracking tools to see who is actually watching their programs - which would give advertisers better information about who they are marketing too. Yes TV networks - you need internet technologies specialists. Just because they know how to turn on a computer and what the differences between a Mac and an IBM are doesn't mean that they are experts on internet technology. You need to hire some super smart kids that are willing to try anything new and work their asses off. Give them what they want - pay them REALLY well - how else are you going to get internet genius to work for you? You need to compete with the start-ups of the world (computer genius aren't going to google anymore - they are going to new start ups that you haven't even heard of yet.)
So find some people who really know the internet demographic and what they expect. Design your site around it - do the marketing research via the web. If you tell them what information you want - they will find a way to get it. Don't tell them HOW - tell them what you need to accomplish - lay out the situation and what you need and why - and they can give you shit you haven't even imagined yet. Quite hiring 80 year old computer programmers and "heads" of the interwebs - and start getting people that actually understand the new technology and the demographic that is most heavily using it. My mom doesn't even know what internet streaming is. I can't imagine her heading up the internet streaming/marketing portion of a business. She'd have no idea.
There's always money to be made. Just be smart about how you make it. Don't annoy people with useless ads. Get the right ads to the right people. If you want to get the right ads to the right people this means that you MUST know your demographic and who you are selling to. Trying to sell wheat bran cereal to 7 year olds - not such a good idea. There must be ways to get information about what peoples viewing habits are. Cookies can do shit like that right? Someone - dear god please come up with a good business model and just go for it. Why do people think that entertainment is unlike any other industry? It's not. They are out to make money just like everyone else. I think that they could come up with a similar model to google in terms of better targeting a demographic/market. It would open them up to a larger number of advertisers - and they could charge a higher amount per ad view b/c it's more targeted to their audience which they could prove that a more targeted ad view resulted in more product sales from their target audience.
Use the power of technology to your advantage! Don't fear it! Use it!
Work smarter people - not harder. Unless it's exercise. Work harder not smarter if you're exercising.
