Tucson/Update

I’m not really sure if I can say everything that went on. I think that the interview went well… I’m sure that I will find out within a couple of days or so. It was a rather strange thing all together. The casual environment was a little unexpected. Everyone I talked to was wearing jeans. The manager for this position was wearing loafers and white socks. . . and he took me out to lunch, which was very nice. However, I had to drive b/c he had taken his motorcycle, and I had to pay b/c he forgot his wallet at the office. Overall, it was pretty amusing.

Tucson was pretty much amazing. I’ve posted the picture I took at the desert museum on my picasa now. Take a look if you’ve got a chance. The weather was basically amazing. Warm – 85to90 sunny – dry. I don’t think you can get much better in April.

The only bad part about the airport is that they don’t have free wifi. I was surprised by the number of places that didn’t have free wifi. It’s relatively cheap – and a great draw for people I would think. Right up there with providing basic cable…. But whatevers.

The city has about the same number of people as Toledo.

We’ll see how everything goes. . .

I started my second job at the ballpark today. It's really boring and mind numbing. The girl that was training me was suprised how quickly I picked it up. It was really dumb. . . I get paid under the table + tips though. So it works out pretty nice. It's pretty chill - and once the season picks up it should be a little less boring. At least it gives me something to do. It also helps remind me how the other half lives. The girl I was working with works part time at this local cafe doing promotions work/marketing - and then works this second job during the summer. The other girls that work there are all college students. I forgot how different my job is than something that's hourly. She's got two kids and is 27. I'm 24 and have zero kids and I don't need this money to pay for anything. She was talking about how hard it was to not spend all the money she was going to make in the next couple of weeks. It was really hard not to look at her funny -- what do you mean spend the $40 we just made??? What the hell only costs $40. There's a good thing about having a pay day once every two weeks -- it's not so depressing to see how little you make. I clearly went home and deposited the money in my savings account on the way home. I bet she'll go out and buy something at wal-mart with hers. . . not to be nasty - but I think the amount I'm making is pathetic - whereas she's excited for the extra cash. She's nice enough, but definitely didn't go to university, which makes it just a different class of person, a little rougher around the edges.

All in all it wasn't a bad way to waste a few hours -- and hopefully these small amounts of money will turn into something larger in my bank account. I'd like to earn a couple grand with this small change job and open an investment account.

It's amazing what a budget has done to my finances. I've really been able to save something and put it in the right place to get that money to make more money. It's hard to realize that money sitting in a checking account actually loses value over time and can't buy as much. But if you put that same money into a savings account it will actually be worth more -- not just in dollars but also in spending power. Since there are so many online savings accounts available that offer relatively high rates of interest (IE HSBC gives 5.05% right now with no minimum deposit) it doesn't make any sense to not put it in. Especially since there are actual HSBC banks here - so it makes it very easy to deposit/withdraw using an ATM. If there weren't banks here it would be much more annoying.

My 401K has done well too. It's amazing to me how much money is in there right now. It's more money than I've ever had on one spot before. I would like to get to the point where I save just as much outside of my 401K as I put into the 401K, namely for a down payment on a house. It's taken me less than 2 years to get to the point I'm at now - I can't imagine that it would take me much longer to get to the same point again -- when I've already got some saved.

Well, I've got other stuff to do, so I guess I'll go do it now.
