Scary

This article really scares me http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/diet.fitness/01/12/fat.attitudes.ap/index.html Look at the last couple of paragraphs. "Wann, who won't use the word "overweight" because she says it's judgmental." Are you joking me? If you are not within the medically acepted weight range for your height -- get over it -- accept it -- whatever you have to do -- but you are overweight. I have absolutely no respect for people who think that being obese is "okay" and that "fat people are the target of a witch hunt in a fitness-obsessed nation" That is absolutely ridiculous. Being overweight is a choice -- you choose what to put in your body -- you are choosing not to change your diet or exercise habit -- you are choosing to remain fat. I sympathsize (and respect) [with] every overweight person who is out there who is trying to do something about it (not like I couldn't stand to loose a few pounds myself) -- it's hard to lose weight -- it's difficult to change your diet. It really is. I know it's a daily struggle to do better -- but people who just say "I'm fat I can't do anything about it -- you should accept me for the way I am" -- Well I don't accept that. It was your choice to put that food in your mouth -- and it continues to be your choice to not do anything about it.

Numerous studies have show how being obese/overweight is bad for you and can make you die sooner. A recent study even showed that even being overweight by an extra 10 or 20 lbs still puts you at risk for diabetes and heart disease -- thus there is no such thing as fat and fit. Physical size is a very visual way that people can see how unhealthy you are -- this clearly is going to play into a person's base instincts -- if you see someone hacking/coughing/sneezing you try not to be near them so that you don't start being unhealthy as well -- I think unconsiously people do the same thing with overweight/obese persons. Is it fair? no. Is it right? no. But I think it happens.

It just really urks me that these people want fat to be accepted in society -- I think the exact opposite -- I think it should be so unacceptable that we help people from a young age to not get fat to start with -- a society that values healthy eating and exercise. But sadly it's only like 20 or 40% of americans that regularly exercise -- ironically 2/3 of americans are obese. Conincidence? I think not.

Bear in mind that legitimate medical reasons exist that explain why some people are naturally heavier than others. Some people suffer from low metabolism, thyroid conditions, and obesity is also been shown over and over to be genetic, in that folks with a family history of it, a consistant one, tend to have a genetic link.

That said folks with these problems can still overcome the issue its just a fuck of a lot harder.

Personally i blame the reason i BECAME obese on my upbringing and family history. I was never raised to eat the right foods or exercise. It was perfectly ok in my family to sit and play games all day, drink a crap ton of pop and eat tons of sugar. I blame my inability to overcome that on myself now. But in many cases people have alot against them before they can take ownership of the problem themselves.
Trust me I know that there are medical reasons why people are overweight -- look at my little brother -- we had no idea what was wrong with him -- we just thought he ate way too much all the time. Turns out he's insulin resistant -- meaning his cells don't uptake glucose like they should. So he was ALWAYS hungry -- if he ate anything it would make him feel even more hungry. Now they figured out what is wrong with him -- and he's on medication -- and has been loosing quite a bit of weight. That's why it's always good to have a yearly physical.
