Buy a Potato Save a Lamp
I never knew that furniture shopping was so difficult. This of course all has a longer story and bigger implications. So some background: Last night I go off to bed lalal, great. Turn off my bedside lamp and enjoy sleep. I do hear a slight pop, but not really knowing what it was, nor what it came from didn't really bother me in my extremely sleepy state. Wake up this morning and try to turn on my lamp -- doesn't want to turn on, flip the switch a couple of times. Okay that didn't work. Try to check the bulb -- it breaks appart in my hands like a cookie that went through air-mail. GREAT! Of course I try to take out the broken bulb bits but only intensify the situation -- now just the metal base is in there with the inside bulb parts that majorily stickout. Clearly I'm in need of a potato -- of which I rarely eat -- thus none are readily available. And do you think that I would go buy a potato to help save the lamp? No. It's better to just go buy a new lamp. Who wants that ugly old lamp anyways? I'll keep it for some random use later -- but it really is ugly. So I went to Lowe's after work today to buy a new lamp. Which is very cute and now sitting next to my bed.
I decided to stop at a furniture store after Lowe's since I'm in dire need of a "Real" bedside table -- the unbalanced metal yaffa blocks can only take you so far. A real bedside table would be a nice compliment to the end table my grandparents gave me this weekend. The sales lady, who is clearly wearing a dark shade of lipstick circa 1997, with too much gold jewlery, and a suit that could have easily been purchased at a Salvation army -- again in 1997. Attempts to help me find a bedside table. She proceeds to try to convince me that crappy plywood is really "solid" wood sheeting, which will hold up well. Ummm 1/8" lewan (sic?) does not constitue "solid" wood in my book. A 5lb weight could break through that. Granted I have no intention of storing a 5lb weight in the drawer of my bedside table -- but I don't want to buy a new bedside table in the next 10 years -- I'd rather just buy something once and get it over with. So right... lewan sheeting is "solid wood drawer base"... right. So after glancing at all their stuff I quickly realize that poor people and old people and people who just dont' know any better must shop there. I guess some people could be convinced. I think what should have given me a clue was that the most expensive sofa I saw was $800. The one I really would like from PotteryBarn -- and is oh so comfortable -- is like $1600. Proving that in this case $ = Quality. So clearly that furniture attempt was a bust. I just can't imagine parting with more than $100 for something that's crap. $100 is a lot, it's like 1/2 a day's work. I would rather part with 8 day's work once in 10 years, than part with 4 day's work every 5. Less time and gas spent on furniture shopping that way. So in the end I bought a $30 lamp from Lowe's. YAY!
Work is absolutely exhausting. I'm busy every minute of the day -- I work a lot more than 8 hours. And a lot of the stuff involves actual thinking. I get home and want to do nothing that involves thought. Days like today, where I didn't get home until 8:30 b/c I ran two relatively short errands after work really fry you. I can't wait until they hire another person -- cause I'm tired.
